Garmin Rino 530 Hcx Canadian Version - How to unlock 5 watt ?
Please don't tell me about the legality of 5 watt GMRS/FRS in canada, this is a theoric question.
I have a Garmin Rino 530 Hcx Canadian Version, the internal GMRS is locked to 2 watt. One of my buddies ordered his (Garmin Rino 530 Hcx) from a US Reseller, it came with 5 Watt enabled. I did ask Garmin tech support if there was a way to unlock 5watt, of course they said no. I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to unlock 5 watt on canadian version and if yes, how to do it. Thank you

Simple answer, no, it's not possible to 'enable 5 watt'. GMRS/FRS radios sold in Canada are built to output at no more then 2 watts, in order to conform to Canadian laws. Your radio is not built the same as your buddy's US one. It's not just 'locked' or turned down to 2 watts, 2 watts is the max for any Canadian Certified GMRS radio.
