PTWs and Real Uppers. Need Some Feedback.

I just installed a real upper on my M16 project the other day. I went to put the gun through it's paces today, and part of that was putting her on the chrono. I was getting velocities about 495-497 fps pretty consistantly using 0.25g Metal Tech BBs. Prior to the swap of uppers, the gun was getting 480-490 fps, leaning more towards the lower 480's, and deviating by 3-4 fps.

The new upper is much stronger than the OE upper, and it's a reinforced upper like the MUR and it's forged, not cast.

Basically, I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed any performance benefits from using the real upper, like increased velocity, or increased accuracy. Accuracy is not something I can test at the moment, and wasn't able to do with the OE upper on the gun, so I have no frame of reference for this gun.

Maybe the seal between the cylinder & hop-up is "tighter"...
How does the upper & lower receiver feel when you open & close the two together...does it require a little more force?

No, force to open and close is about the same as with the OE upper as well. The only thing I can think of is reduced resonamce or flexing of the new upper.

All the forward energy of the piston when it hits the cylinder head is going to be trasmitted via the hop-up to the outer barrel, which is rigidly mounted to the upper receiver. The OE ones are not that strong, are cast and may be prone to flexing, even if it's only 1 mm or less. The real upper is very thick, forged and thus very strong and not likely to flex.

Basically, I was wondering from any users who have installed an upper like that, if the noticed a similar effect. Using a real upper on a PTW may be more than simply cosmetic, or to replace a broken OE upper. There may be a performance benefit to doing so. I don't know for sure, that's why I guess I'm asking for feedback from other users on this.

Kinda off topic, but what kind of upper is that? I like the boxier look. Very attractive. Would look alot nicer with a deflector though

Name brand is unknown. It was made by a gunsmith in Arizona and sold at Citadel Gun and Safe in Las Vegas. And it was priced very reasonable, far less than a OE upper from Systema as a part.

I put a VLTOR MUR on my 08 and it shoots 325 fps higher then my 07. The 08 is a pre-built and the 07 was a kit so that might explain the difference.

Brad's upper is a Sun Devil Mfg.
They are machined from a solid billet; supposedly stronger than GI spec.

That sounds right. Yeah, you can tell it's machined from a billet as opposed to being cast. It's very thick, and was tough to work on.

I got the one without forward assist and shell deflector. You hardly need it for a PTW. They list the price as $169.95.

I think he means 25 fps, the other number must be a typo.
