Mildot scope - range estimation

I'm looking for a straight answer from someone who really know.

When I'm ranging targets using my mildot scope, should I set it to 3x or 9x? I found pretty conflicting answers on the net, and none of my books are stating this very important detail.

Ranging the same object being at 500 feets can result in a 190 ish feet estimation on 9x and 490 ish feets on 3x, wich is closer to reality. My guess is the correct way to estimate range is using the 3x power setting, but I must be 100% sure.

Tanx.

there's only one answer : RTFM
Seriously it should be in your manual, if not you'll have to try it with known distance and height.

The setting is dependent on the manufacturer. Some like to have it at the max. magnification of the scope and some like minimum (dunno why).

Refer to you manual and if that's not possible then set up a 3.6" inch target at 100 yards. Adjust the scope till it fills exactly the space between the centre of 1 dot to the centre of another it's neighbouring dot. That's your set mag for the mildot ranges.

if it's a good quality scope, it can be a FFP (first focal plane) meaning that the angle stay constant at any focale. Check if the size of the reticule is changing while zooming

It's not.
It's a cheap scope too. I'll probably endure it while I accumulate some cash to buy a real mildot scope.

so you'll have to try it : 1 mil (center to center) = 1m at 1000m or 10 cm at 100 m. Use a chain to mesure 100m : if you want an exact answer you'll need exact distance.
For some scopes it's at max power for other it's at min and some are in the middle

ps : use metric system with mildot, it's made for.

I know it's made for metric, but using feets is more practical since everything is in feets in airsoft. Less conversions to make.
