Hi, maybe you can help me here!

I was wondering what you guys think of the G&P aimpoint! Is it any good? are there any better brands for aimpoints? Plus, what is the point of getting a cantilever mount as opposed to a normal mount? I couldn't find ant info on cantilevers anywhere!

thanks

What do you mean by "normal" mount?

I have the cantilever mount...IMHO its fucking ugly and still haven't found a use for it, other than mounting it on the 20mm rail of the receiver and having it look "odd" because of the way it sticks out. Regardless if you mount it backwards or forwards. The only thing different (besides the way it looks of course) is that the cantilever sits higher up on the 20mm rail. By "normal mount" I assume you mean the "L" shaped mount. It doesn't sit very high up on the 20mm rail...basically if you didn't have a platform for it, when you look through the scope, you'd just see the bottom of the front sight.

I don't think there are many significant differences between the replica lines of Aimpoint scopes...other than the varying costs people sell them for.

To replace my cantilever mount, I purchased the G&P MK18 Straight Mount from eHobby Asia. And as a back up sight, I have a Tokyo Marui M Series Flip Up Rear Sight in case my battery runs out.

For the time being, if you can't afford the above items, i'd go with the cantilever if you're going to be taking off the hand guard and mounting it on top of the receiver.

If you're mounting it on the actual hand guard, you can go with the "L" mount and get a mount that goes through the hole on top of the hand guard itself. I can't find it on eBay right now but i'll keep looking.

If you buy the scope with the "L" mount and mount it on top of the receiver 20mm rail, you'll need One Of These so that it sits up a bit higher on the rail and so the front sight won't obscure your vision.

There is a vast variety of scope mounting options available. Just take a stroll through eBay with the keywords "scope mount" or "aimpoint mount" and see what you think might best fit you. The above criteria is based on my personal preference, so what I said may not be what you're looking for. Just go with what you think looks cool to you and is practical and not above and beyond unrealistic.

Basically i want the red dot to be able to sit on top of the front sight, just on top. Does the cantilever allow you to use the iron sights? and do you think it would be wise to get flip up front sight to apart from rear. i was thinking maybe of an hk416 style front sight.

Do you have any pictures to describe what you want? I don't understand what you're asking.

The G&P aimpoint replica is pretty good.

The "L" mount it comes with is low. It works great on top of the M4/M16carry handle, but it's too low (IMHO) on the top receiver rail. With the RDS mounted on the carry handle, you shoud still be able to use the iron sights with the right rail mount:

I use the same mount as NovaKaynE. It's not high enough to let me use the flip up iron sights.
