I wonder where some folks who replied got their information about real scopes, but anyway.
It truly depends on what look you really want. I happen to think that an RDS on a M14 would really clash. That gun would look best with a superb scope. Now... is it useful? Probably not. The ballistics of airsoft are just too bizarre to be useful with a normal real-gun scope. What you have to do is compromise and dig around a bit. There ARE scopes designed for low powered airguns (and airsoft) who'se ranges are short that would be perfect, but they are hard to find. Then you have to adapt a mount base and eye-relief distance that allows you to use the scope in question with goggles. That too takes a bit of digging and research. When that is done, you have to learn the techniques to 'zero' the scope at a consistent given range. Going for a 'scout' type setup IS possible, but you have to be sure that all of the above options are considered first. It would be unique, but if you dont choose carefully it wont work well. |

That really is a lot to consider. I have actually found a manufacturer in BC that makes scout mounts for M14s. I think ideally I'd want 2x magnification, but so far the lowest I have found is 3x. We'll see, I guess!
As soon as it's done, I will post my gun in airsoft media.

'Looks' fine to me too, but it sits very high. It's more of a chin-weld than a cheek-weld, but in the world of airsoft it'll work.

Should work fine for an eotech or aimpoint, but for a normal scope you will have the problem of only being able to attach one ring, which might make it a little unstable. I heard he was in the works with a 'version2' however, which was to be longer.

The current commercial M21 uses the scope mentioned above. However that scope does not get very good reviews from real steel owners. SKBY.

I run Aimpoints in the foreard/scout position on my real steel M14s.The dot is quick & easy to pick up, and the FOV with both eyes open is excellent.
On my Mark 14 Mod 0: On a previous incarnations of the above rifle: On a Smith Enterprises mount: On a KAC M14 RAS: SKBY.

Here are better pics of his scout mount: It is a steel mount and is parkerised. The mount is designed to mount between the reciever and op rod guide.Ideally just behind the op rod guide. You will have to cut your handguard to use this mount. He was working on a longer scout mount, but there is no update on this at this time. He also has a website: http://www.whamocamo.bizland.com/rooster33/ SKBY.

Very very good info and pics guys. What I'm thinking now, is getting the VFC RAS. This would give me the flexibility to try different optics configurations, like standard, scout, etc. What do you guys think?

IMO a sniper rifle doesn't really match with a RDS which is meant for rapid target acquisition at close ranges. You've got a long gun, it's not really meant for a no magnification optic which is meant for rapid aiming with an easily pointable weapon.
That being said, whatever turns your crank. There are some technical tradeoffs to mounting a RDS further from your eye. An RDS mounted close has a larger field of view through the RDS lense because a greater angle is included within the 1x lense. Also, because your eye is closer to the lense, the dot will appear larger and brighter. However, you lose horizontal or vertical displacement from the centreline from which the dot is visible. A RDS projects a dot within a somewhat narrow angle (say 15deg total angle/7.5 deg from the centreline). This means that increasing the distance from your eye to the optic will allow a greater distance from the centreline from which you can view the dot. I find that a RDS mounted further to the front puts more RDS frame close to the centre of my aimpoint which clutters my sight picture, but the dot is very rapidly acquired (if it's a bright RDS). I find it works well in CQB situations because of the large area of acquisition. However, for more carefull shooting, I prefer to bring the optic in close to enlarge the RDS frame further from my aimpoint and free the centre of my aimpoint from frame clutter.
