You gotta remember too that regular bb's are plastic, and therefor made out of strings of carbon and hydrogen which the major components of carbon based lifeforms like us. The reason why it is so difficult to bio-degrade is that the bb's have either a mineral or petroleum coating that prevents biodegredation.

So in short: The plastic bb's won't contaminate the soil but the owner will have to put up with the bb's sitting in his field for about 100 years.
