Yes, 9.6V batteries greatly increase the rate of wear, often it's the tappet plate or piston that suffers, but in your case a gear or two. Could also be that a tooth on a gear sheared off (I've seen it about a dozen times last year, even top of the line gears) and shredded the gear box with metal teeth. Not battery related really, just metal fatigue.
