I suppose you could cover your entire magazine with it, but most people that I see run them, the grip tape, only cover the portions where their fingers would be placed when indexing for magazines during a speed reload from kydex setup, competition rigs, but then again thats what I've seen.
These same individuals tend to index their magazines a certain way, those that have their magazines positioned with rounds, bullet tips, facing the center-line of their body. Basically indexing a rifle mag the same way they would do it for a pistol mag, leading to better efficiency and consistency. However, if you prefer the "beer-can-grip", indexing magazines that are stored with rounds facing away from the center line, then you get a slightly more postive grip than indexing the rifle magazine like a pistol mag.
Different strokes for different folks, I personally don't see a great advantage to it myself, but I haven't gotten to the level of split times during reloading to notice any significant difference between using grip tape on mags and not.
