It's his first time opening a gearbox. I know you've had good experiences with sorborathane, I have too, as well, but being a first timer the chance of screwing something up is generally high, so lowering any risk of shreadding the piston is good.
I personally have a systema silent in my gun, and it indeed DID make the gun noticeably quieter. But he isn't looking for quietness, he's looking for prolonged gearbox life.
