If you properly clean the surface and wait for the paint to dry, I'd say wait about 1 week, I find it pretty scratch resistant, though I do usually use a grey collor primer, so if you do scratch the paint it will show a nice metal looking grey collor and not a transparent plastic
Just to add to that, if you really want a really textured and nice finish to the gun, sanding with 220 grit sandpaper beforehand, painting then using Krylon Matte Finish once your done will give you excellent results.

Only use sandpaper on grips and stocks to give it that nice rugged texture.
