Well, at least it wasn't an expensive battery pack and you defiantly learned something. This happened to me but I heard the noise as soon as I plugged the battery up. The charger was on but it would not let me select a charge method. You should talk to the person who sold you the pack if they wired it wrong. That is what happened to my fiend and why I had my experience when I tried charging it.
