Disassemble your gun! Painting it all together means that you also paint your hardware ( screws, bolts etc ) and that paint may get into your inner mechanisms.. both of which are bad things!

Apply lots of really thin coats about 20 minutes apart ( there are about 25 separate coats of paint on the gun, including all 4 colors )

Mask out the individual sections ( to form the stripes ) at random using torn strips of masking-tape.

Take your time! This paint job took about 3 1/2 - 4 hours ( not including disassembly! )

Beyond that... try painting something else first. Work out your technique on a cheap toy gun and then paint yours...
