To start out, if you can only afford one general pattern. Get woodland.
It is a very general pattern that works well enough in most all areas. For Milsim purposes Woodland generally has a spot in most mislims that have camo restrictions, so you should mostly be covered there.
That being said, With 3 years left to go, there is no reason why you could not be able to afford a few different patterns. Brit DPM is another very good choice, and often cost effective. Flectarn is pretty cheep as well. You could probably have all 3 sets for under $150 if you know where to look, don't mind a little bit of wear, and are not some weird fit/size.
I have in my closet, Issue – Marpat, ACU, CADPAT, Flectarn, DPM (both arid and temp). I have Multicam, OD’s, Tri color desert, Desert night time (The canceled issue stuff from the Gulf War) And probably some other weird crap that I have hidden in a box in my basement because I have never used it.
Out of all of this, I like Marpat, and Multicam the most. But generally I choose my patterns based off game/team restrictions, and most of all season and field that I will be playing on. Of all the uniforms I have, I actually find the issue ACU uniform that a friend gave me when I went to stay with him on Ft Knox (part of a Bradly crew) is the most comfortable set I own. So if games allow it this season, my ACU will see some use.
I rarely use CADPAT anymore. For our fields here in Edmonton it is just too dark/green. Only time I break it out, is when a Milsim calls for it.
So to recap - if you are only able to afford one set of clothing in the next 3 years, and do not have much money, woodland is a safe all around bet. If you can afford it, start to expand the collection to those mentioned in above posts. Have a look around your area, ask people that play at your local fields as to what works great for that area.
