try putting your ear to the top of the mag, if you hear hissing it might be a problem (generally if you hear a leak, its pretty bad). alternatively, you could summerse the mag in water to look for air bubble seeping out of the mag. just be sure to dry it well before storing (towels, hair dryer)
there is most likely no damage done to the mag, but i wouldn't suggest you depress the valve every time to vent gas.
