What are the exact cells in the battery? It might not be a problem/defect with the battery, but the cells might not be efficient enough. If they are Sanyo KR1100AAU AA cells, the discharge rate is like 10 amps, which definately won't be able to crank your spring.
My 8.4V 3000mah nimh (30 amp discharge rate) has no problems cranking my 200% spring. You don't need stupid amounts of cells anymore. You just need 7 or 8 good ones.
