I've made one purchase of gear from some one that was making gear for me (custom holster). He was quite upfront with me that it would take a while (a month or two) as he was backed up with 5 or 6 orders already (he has a day job too). Knowing this I had no problem with placing my order. It also helped that I didn't have to pay until the order was done (though I don't know if that's SOP with kit makers or just a special favour for me)
