That's not been my experience. Sure, I notice you said "tend to". My limited experience has been that there seems to be a lot of smaller brushless RC motors that can do very well. I've bought a lot of GWS parts for my RC designs. They're cheap, but pretty decent quality, and customer service.
The hobby shop down the street has some different brands and sizes that I've wondered a few times might work.
