It is definitely better to get a good charger right from the start. A smart/balance charger is recommended and should only run you $60-$100 at most and will last you for quite some time. And the good thing with some of these smart/balance chargers is whether you buy NiMh, NiCd, LiPo, or LiFe batteries, the charger will be able to charge each and every one of them properly without reducing their life expectancy.

As for batteries any NiMh nun-chuk style battery 9.6v battery should fit in the crane stock or alternatively a compact LiPo 11.1v 15C (3 cells) should also fit the buffer tube.
