If you do decide to use the VHF frequencise, and not just the FRS ones. Use the DOT channels. They are temporary assignment and they will not cause interferance to any public safety users. These are good choices as they are not used by any public safety groups anywhere in the U.S. or Canada. If near a mall, they maybe used by stores etc.
Red 151.625 MHz
Purple 151.955
Blue 154.570
Green 154.600
VHFvs.Uhf

Vhf, does have better range while outside, UHF will have better penetration inside a building, and car to car. Realistically at field distances any 2.5 watt + radio of either type is ideal.
