But in combat, you will not often get the chance to adopt a good range drill position as you have to be moving and adapt to your obstacles and cover. When I can't use a proper position, I try to use my arm to "shoulder" the stock. In odd positions, it work well enough.
You can even cant the rifle sideways to shoulder it and keep a sight picture.
