it does at least two things...
1. helps to center the hopup unit and barrel and hold them in line
2. helps the barrel/rubber from moving forward...which will create air leaks and maybe feeding issues

you can ream out the ring or use some fine grit emery paper to open it up. take your time with it.

teflon taping the barrel/rubber will help "jam" the barrel into the hopup so it doesn't move forward...careful not to contort the rubber if it's too tight.
