I was saying that you can use LEDs that are smaller than the 3mm ones but are just as bright (and even as bright as 5mm LEDs). I wasn't implying that 5mm LEDs would fit.

What you're looking for is a high luminescence rating, ie how bright it is. You can get tiny surface mount LEDs that are just as bright as 3mm or 5mm...
