German WW2 Browning Pistol

Hey...I was doing a little research on the Browning 1911/ Hi Power 9mm....and little did I know that certain Waffen SS and Fallschirmjager units actually used Browning HI Power pistols in WW2. It appears after the Germans invaded Belgium, that they began manufacturing the 9mm Browning as the 640 (b)at the FN Herstal factory and issued quantities to the SS and paratroopers.

So...now for all of you WW2 impressionists....toting a Browning Hi-power while you are in axis kit won't be out of place.

Odd to think that one of the iconic images of the allied forces in WW2 actually has some Nazi lineage!

SS and Polizei units also carried Swedish produced Colt .45s and Polish ViS/Radoms.

The Browning Hi Power is not the 1911.

Yes I know Styrak..... that is why it is referred to the Hi Power...not the 1911

Isn't the 1911 a Colt?

rustysniper October 26th, 2009 15:40

Yes...but the original design was done John Browning if I have my facts straight. The 1911 was manufactured by several companies including Colt. And as far as I know, the Browning HI Power was manufactured by FN Herstal in Belgium as well as Inglis in Canada. There may be more but those are the 2 companies I know.
