Tour of Duty - Sgt. Anderson kit

Hi there,

I want to do Vietnam loadout as my first kit. I have the guns I need. Now I want to begin gathering the gear. Right now, I want to emulate Sgt. Zeke Anderson's kit from Tour of Duty as close as possible.

I am definitely not an expert on any type of gear. All I know is that the Sarge carried a K-bar knife on his left shoulder. If someone could tell me exactly what Anderson carried and in what configuration, please let me know. I already know where to get gear. It is just a matter of what to get. I would appreciate it if only posters knowledgeable on the Vietnam era post on this thread. Thanks!

When doing a 'Nam loadout, you're not going to look too different from anyone else. Those were days well before the word "Modular" came before the word "Gear."

Most, if not all, of what he's wearing is standard gear. That's not the best picture around, but if you want a great looking 'Nam setup, I'll throw down a few bits and pieces for ya.

M-56 Suspender
M-56 Universal Small Arms Pouches
M-56 Pistol Belt (NOT Davis fastener)
M-61 Field Pack (Buttpack)
M-56 First Aid/Compass Pouch
M-56 E-Tool Cover

There's your very basic webgear kit. Which from the looks of that pic, Zeke is wearing.

For BDU... 2nd or 3rd Pattern ODs, there are some really decent repros out there for a good price.

Everything you'll ever need can be purchased here:

Trey is a great guy, and all the 'Namsofters here on ASC can vouch for him.

well that all depends which one of his looks you want, IIRC, he was in some recon unit and had some tiger stripe camo.

Zeke used an Colt XM-177 A1 (Car-15) for the majority of the show (both in tiger stripe and OD's), and he pretty much always (whenever I can remember) had an Ithaca 37 shotgun (stock removed).

The squad become 'Team Viking', a SOG team in season three, episode 3, from there on wearing the tiger stripe until they went back to doing S&D patrols at the end with a squad of cherries.

Zeke also had a boonie tied to his shoulder strap, though he never wore it.

Don't forget the I-own-you-motherfucker bandana made from a regular cotton undershirt ;)

Sleeves were usually cut off...and practice your barrel roll.

Deftonius is 100% correct. He has given you the technical terms for all the items he's carrying. Now it is up to you to find photos / videos of the character and take note of the quantity and location of all the pieces.

ToD is relatively accurate with a few minor discrepancies. The internet is a beautiful resource, so use the photos it provides to determine what the errors are and then either choose to correct them, or at the very least be aware of them incase someone confronts you.

Yeah and the whole team each had random weapons, Goldman used an AK and IIRC Taylor had an MP40 or Greasegun or something similar

I remember it being a Carl Gustav "Swedish K" as opposed to Mp40 afaik, but yeah, M3 as well.

What was the reasoning behind them having random weapons anyway? so Charlie couldn't tell that they were US troops?

more like they used what they felt best suited.

I see, but it would be difficult to share ammo/mags with everyone using a different gun. I thought the random guns along with the tiger stripes would make them appear more like mercs rather than army personnel since alot of their special missions took them to places where they weren't supposed to be e.g. accross the border into Cambodia, however I could be wrong :)

Not quite.

An AK and an M16 sound VERY different. It didn't take long for even the newest cherry to tell the difference.

SEAL teams and green berets would often use AKs or any other weapons commonly used by NVA/VC to confuse the enemy. "Hmm, they're using he same shit as us, friendly fire?"

It's for the same reason that most SEAL team members in country's diet would consist of fish and rice, to even SMELL like the enemy. Of course, using US issue OD's was a big mistake, so they instead wore black pyjamas just like VC.

You can get everything from moore's.....

You'll want the standard OD bdus, a basic webgear layout, and the knife (probably an ontario knife not the kabar, can be found in weapons related section in moores as USMC fighting knife). The XM-177E2 is the carbine he is using most of the time, but he uses the M16A1 too (like when he cocks it in the show intro). Pretty simple most nam impressions use the same basic ingredients, its just making the headband, the boonie on his shoulder... that sort of personal touch.

Thanks a lot for your help fellows! That is everything I need to know:)
