A Question About Flecktarn

OK guys, it's pretty straightforward. I have noticed that there are what appears to be two different versions of flecktarn. I'm not talking about desert flecktarn either. It seems like one is lighter than the other, and uses slightly different shades of the five colours. Anyone have any ideas?
Oh yeah, and Lang Lebe Flecktarn.

Do you mean the Danish Fleck (M84)?

There's also the Chinese Fleck...

Or maybe you've been seeing some of the different dyes.

Faded fleck? Fake fleck made for thugs? Maybe those ghetto/gangsta complanies switched from US woodland products to fleck now :)

I found that Flecktarn was too visible in Quebec/Ontario woods. They have a bit too much red.

Telnets December 24th, 2005 10:45

Flecktarn tends to fade quite a bit, just like Cadpat and a lot of other camos out there. However, if you get a new set thats unwashed, and wash it properly the first few times the color can set good, and not end up all dull down the road. This is probably what you have seen. Some uniforms that have been taken care of and have vibrent colors (or new uniforms) and the duller used versions, which is just due to sun and washing without taking the propper care.

If your actualy talking about different colors in whole (ie flectarns redish brown, vs denmarks green/black) then you would have to post a pic of what you saw, and I could probably tell you which country was or is using the varient of color.

Lastly, there are different dye lots of fabric, meaning fabric that was dyed say in, 1990 is not going to be the exact same as fabric dyed in 1995. Colors change slightly, and the dye is different which they might change to be more fade resistant or such, which changes the color slightly. So that may be the case as well.

Flectarn has been around for a very long time, so it has undergone a lot of "modifications" over the years, most are very minimal, but are still noticeable when you look.

Ah, I see! thanks for the info. Now, how do you properly wash brand-new flecktarn so that it sets?

Kane December 24th, 2005 15:55

I notice a big difference in dye colors between two articles of new Flecktarn. The issue shirt if darker than my KHS Kommando pants, but they ARE BOTH NEW. Doesn't bother be, like Telnets stated.... different batches of ye make for different colors. Makes it look better if you ask me.

Lerch December 24th, 2005 17:34

Well don't forget, just because it's new...doesn't mean it's new. Confused?
Let me explain. Most of the time, units will overstock on uniforms and end up leaving sets in boxes, where they don't see light (ie. fade). After awhile, the unit cleans out for new uniforms, and sells the old stock to surplus. Hence you have mint flecktarn going into circulation.
The same thing happened for the British S94.

Ps. Most issued flecktarn is not from the last few years, however the custom items (KHS) is. That's why you get the dye variations.

The flecktarn set I have is actually from my cousin in Germany. Issued, but never worn.

I've got a brand-new (never worn) flecktarn parka I'm thinking about selling, how much you guys figure these go for?

yanhchan December 24th, 2005 19:03

German parkas go for around like 60-70....flectarn german isn't that rare...i guess the set is around 40-50 max...

In the late 90s the Bundeswehr looks for a improved Flecktarn. So they developed a version in which the colours seems to fade or it could be the german 5-Farben Tropentarn.
Check the link for the exact colour:
