Storing your guns
 

Hey all!
I was wondering how you store an airsoft gun. I want to store them according to the law. Should I be treating them as a real one or as a toy.

That's how it is for me, where I've a supportive fiancée, and my only kids have paws. If you have kids, you'll want to at least keep them in a locked closet.
But as for actual gun storage? Maybe a rack, for display, and to keep them all in one place. A lot of people like pegboard for a birder "gun room" display. But as for a safe or anything über-secure? No. They're air guns...

Gun Bag or Case in the closet.

I got my pistol in a case and my m4 in a case. Only because I don't have boxes for them. My KC02 is in a styrofoam cutout that I want to replace as my sighs dont fit it and it has started depositing tiny what balls everywhere. Soon it will be in a Pelican Case or bag. Honestly it makes thm easier to transport if they are in a case with a handle.

Have a full bedroom setup for my Guns, however no kids and my fiancée has the other spare room for all her horse tack.

Mud room off of the garage with two locking doors, one with a door bar. Beyond that they are either in a case or apart. "The law" as you are concerned about is strictly about accountability. Airsoft guns are considered firearms for purposes of the criminal code, so unless something negligent happens they don't have to be "locked up". That being said, they shouldn't be easy to steal or able to attract attention. Your living situation is unique so it's up to you to take care of it. However, let's say there was a search of your house, for something unrelated, and airsoft guns were found loaded in a bag in your closet, you shouldn't get in trouble like it was a real firearm. Remove battery, remove ammo, it is now a paperweight. It was a good question though.

I treat mine like the real deal and lock them in gun safes - would rather that than some kid get ahold of them and use them in the commission of a crime.

I was going to make my own out of plywood, but I was going to ask first if there were any better ideas. But I may just store them in my bedroom closet. Your setup looks amazing btw.

So currently the laws are still pretty lax on store of Airsoft guns. There was a recent supreme court decision but it doesn't seem to have trickled down too much in regards to storing them similarly to a firearm.

The best advice I have for you:

1) Contact your local police department and ask them what they would deem as appropriate storage. Many will tell you there is nothing requiring them to be locked up but some may, so best to check with them first. Worst case scenario is if you get into trouble down the road, you can point to that email as proof that you did what you were told.

2) Consider your household and surroundings. Do you have children? Young siblings? Are your parents or family members okay with the presence of weapons? Are your neighbors aware of your sport? If you are going to store the weapons out in the open (on a gun rack, or a wall hanging for example) then make sure that they are not in reach of young ones, or in view of an open window. People do look in, and if they see an assault rifle hanging on the wall, expect a visit from the police sooner or later.

3) Treat them as if they were a real firearm. I have over twenty guns in my household hung up on walls, and the rule for all them is that they must be on safe, mag out, battery out and chamber cleared before storage. You wouldn't store a real gun when it was hot, so don't store an airsoft gun that's hot. Remember that when you have people over, they will often want to look / touch and almost always that involves pulling the trigger once. We've all seen that Youtube video of the kid shooting his monitor. Don't be that kid.

Finally, get creative. I've seen some awesome pieces for gun storage, from roll out closets to folding seat-racks. Figure out an idea you like and make it happen. It's your collection, so make sure you are happy with how they are stored.
