ASC homepage with regards to Nov 11th
Anyone else a little perturbed about the fact that ASC's home page has no article mentioning Remembrance day and why it is the most important holiday we have?
With Canada's most somber day right around the corner, everyone's in a frenzy about being a dirt squirrel to win prizes... ...Seriously? That makes front page and higher on peoples priority lists? I regard airsoft as a pass time to have the highest loyalty and best camaraderie in any sport we play nowadays with its roots growing from soil that was given to us by soldiers who did and still are paying the highest price to Canada. Don't get me wrong I fully support the cause that movember raises awareness for, but where did growing facial hair for one month take precedence over the fallen heroes? Especially when they only ask for people to fashion a red poppy for a couple weeks and to spend 1 hour in respect. Am I blowing this out of proportion? I honestly don't give a sh*t if you think so. For those of you who will spend Friday sleeping in or hungover go ahead. But for me and the thankful we have a ceremony to attend. In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie, In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. Rest in Peace Comrades. |
There'll be something up before Friday I'm sure.
There usually is. |
I don't need a hobby website to "remind" me about the significance of Nov 11 or the sacrifices our fighting men and women have made.
That being said, this website is run by volunteers, on their own time, shit gets busy. |
Hi OP thanks for logging in. In case you were not aware Jeroon is a Dutch name and so is my Last name Neither of which I would have if it was not for the Canadian Army that Crossed the Rhine and saved my Grandfather and Grand Mother, Now recently deceased thank you for your condolences. My own Father and two aunts spent the war Hiding from Nazi's in den Haag and Somewhere is the Jacket that my Opa had shot through by a Nazi Guarding the Rail roads from pilfering Dutchmen. Seems my Opa was stealing Rail road ties to burn and keep his three kids warm through the winter. That's when he was not pressed into clearing the rubble from the streets for three days after a British bombing, and yes the bombing my Grampa knew well as the buildings were falling behind him as he pedalled his delivery trike like Satan was at his heals and the shoppes and apartments crashing in behind him. Yes my Gran didn't know if he was dead or alive for three days with three young kids, till he finally turned up at home still starving and near dead. She did know where he had gone as she took the route orders and acted the dispatch for the micro business they kept going through the war.
You know I come from a line of Dutchmnen who owe alot to the great Canadians who battles the Nazi's my Grandfather on Mothers side with 11 kids had to hide in the long slope roof of their home when Nazi's came to take men to work camps, he laid a mattress in there as some times he had to hide for days. My Mother pointed out exactly where he hid thanks to Google street veiw now available in Hilversum. I listened as my mother told my 7 year old son of how the Germans shot down a British plane as she walked from school one day, and the pilots ejected and then the guns shot the pilots in their parachutes mid air as well. I own Army Issue and have had a few chances to meet and speak with the Canadian Vets of Holland and it is truly humbling to hear what they have done, in Italy, France Holland and what they lost, who they lost. If you don't already own a piece of this Canadian legacy then don't go look for it on the front page of a hobby website. |

Now to the original subject, I think that a small message on the front page should have something on it. In case you forgot, in past years there has ALWAYS been something there. |
I have a compromise.
Until some sort of 'official' post is put on the homepage, Drake could change his avatar to a poppy. That way we've got Remembrance Day and Movember all wrapped up in one post until Friday. But anyway, yeah, this is a hobby website, like TANK and AI said, we don't really need a reminder about the day (sure it's nice, but not a necessity). The people on here to whom the day has meaning will still have their days of parades and memories, with or without logging on to ASC. |
All understood.
Today was my glorious shitpit of a day along with learning of the vandalism of Calgarys Poppy Plaza as well as anti-veteran messages being left everywhere. Appreciation this year Ive noticed has gone down alot. Wether its because too many people think that the war is over since troops are returning and dont contribute as they used to, or eveyones jumping on the movember bandwagon this year. So, with all being said, apologies to all the staff. yeah I ranted. |
We got people out this way stealing poppy boxes and shit too. It's a universally dickish planet we inhabit.
And you're right about the increase in apathy and appreciation... Shit, I haven't even seen a poppy box all week. And with BF3 and MW3 both out in the last few days, I suspect most people will be remembering on Live and PSN with their photo realistic 'ceremonies' |
war memorial here in my small town had the statue of a soldier vandalized. Apparently some little shits took a hammer to it and chipped off some of the web belt pouches.

Last week in Ottawa someone walked into a Timmies and stole a box of Poppies from the legion.
|
A buddy of mine said that if he were in charge, anyone who stole from vets or the legion (i.e. poppy boxes) would get to serve a one month sentence slinging coffee from Tim Hortons.
At CFB Kandahar. |

You know what? You people piss me off. Seriously, you whiny prima donas. You do realize this place is run by volunteers, right? And someone else posted the Movember thing, I posted a temporary fix for people who couldn't access the site which is, in fact, of bona fide important to the site's operation (and I already had a poppy in my signature, Gunk, thankyouverymuch). On top of other tasks that need doing, AND on top of another select group of people who'll whine if the Age Verifications don't get processed fast enough so now I have to do that almost daily. And what do I get for my trouble? Jack and shit. Which also happens to be exactly the amount I'm getting from a the majority of my clients who are either going bankrupt or are otherwise failing to pay up in a timely manner, not that I expect any of you to give a flying shit.
Nonetheless, there's time out of my day for something on the front page -- mostly out of respect for those who served and continue to serve -- and a big side order of fuck you all for the whiny denizens of this place. Goddamnit. |

If I were you, I'd take a vacation from this board when E.D. Awareness month rolls around.... |
Oops... I didn't even notice your signature when I posted that. My bad.
I thank you all the same, Drake. |
