purchasing my first gun mp5 sd5

hi everyone i'm new to this forum and also a newbie to airsoft. I used to play paintball a lot and was always interested in changing to airsoft. me and four of my freinds are looking for a new gun and i was really interested in the G&G mp5sd5. I've taken intiative to search the web and find out the most I could on the G&G. I will be playing woodsball for the most part so it's going to be 25g bbs. Will range be affected by using a heavier bb? I also heard the piston heads were not too shabby. Will the viton orings i hear about fix the compression problem or should i purchase a new modify polycarbonate piston and piston head to resolve the problem. Also will the m110 spring make a difference in range without wearing out my gears or any other stock parts? I wouldn't mind playing with the whole gun stock but im scared to be dissapointed by performance. 380 fps would be a good short term goal for me Id be happy with that. last question 007airsoft or buyairsoft.ca?

Thannks a lot guys cause its probably not the first time u answer this

A saying : Why fix something that's not broken?
Even tho if G&G Compression set sucks, they still run good.

And heavier BB's will affect accuracy and reduce the wind effect on the BB's.
Also, modify piston, piston head and cylinder set are great, but you could wait a bit till your gun has some problem before "upgrading" it. Stock they already perform well.

And 007airsoft would be a wiser choice then buyairsoft.

thanks man!

My personal opinion is that the MP5 is a horrible platform for a first/only gun. I play woodsball and have an MP5 and MP5SD. The mags are long and get in the way. It has no rail system to put anything on. High-cap mags are terrible to wind. Noone has spare parts (at your field), so it's better you have a gun that other players can support. If you forget your mags you can't play.

It's a good gun for realism/CQB, for for practical woodsball any M4 blows it away. There are lots of guns out there that are good woodsball guns - I don't think the MP5 is one. Any no gun is good if you're not age verified.

I have pmed Shakal today to be age verified today he just hasnt replied yet. Im very happy for the input it only sucks since the sd5 was my favorite gun :S so your saying that performance wise there is a big difference between th mp5 and m4 (range, velocity, and accuracy) in woodsball? which gun from g&g would u recommend for me? i also have to add that the g&g sd5 comes with a rail for optic accessories if im not mistaken.

simonvee June 18th, 2010 00:40

ive checked 007 airsoft and even the g&g m4/m16 seem to come with high cap mags

Rugger_can June 18th, 2010 00:46

don't upgrade your first gun right away. Play for a season with it with good quality ammo and learn the ins and outs of air soft and their handling dynamics.

Upgrade the player not the gun.

In general BNIB gun comes with Hi-caps magazines... I would recommend you to buy some mid-caps once you'll have your gun.

Performance wise nearly all stock guns are around 300-330fps, so there is no difference. It's more standardization (ie. buying a Ford or a Ferrari) and looks. In MY field (each one is different), M4's are standard, and can be repaired on field, or in a day (we have lots of spare parts). If you lose a part (ie. it pops off on the field) we own spares, and are easily available. I have found MP5/MP5SD parts harder to get.

Personally, I would recommend an M4 as your main gun (cheap parts, easy supply, help friends out, swap mags, in a firefight you can help supply mags, etc), and ANY other gun as your second gun. (G36, MP5, G33, etc). AK's are doing well here too, but you should have a good supply of mags between you and your friends.

The MP5SD3 is one of my favourite guns. I love it - in real life. In airsoft, it's a PITA gun. (pain in the ass). The mags are a pain, and the little front handgrip covers pop out all the time. It takes a small battery, that none of my other guns use. It has no rail. (ya, it takes a top claw mount, but that doesn't count. I like rails to throw grips and accessories on).

If you're getting AV'ed hold off on buying a gun until it goes through and you have a look through our classifieds and AV retailers. Check out everything you have available before making a purchase. Your patience will pay off.

In the mean time get yourself out to a game and check out as many guns as you can in person. If you are friendly, willing to listen to people and show a general attitude of respect and willingness to learn people will be MORE than happy to let you hold, shoot or even play with their guns (rental terms to be discussed between yourselves). Once you are able to do that you might find that you don't like the MP5, or an M4/M16 either. You might end up liking an M14 or SCAR or AK or some other gun more. Or you might find the MP5 or M4/M16 is best suited for you, only way to find out is by actually holding and shooting one.

So don't think you're in a rush to buy a gun, spend more time researching and saving money and you might just walk away with a perfect gun instead of making a rash decision and regretting it sooner/later.

+1 to that, i got to this forum in december 2009, got av'ed january 2010 and I bought my first pistol and AEG about 3-4 weeks ago (end of may, beginning of june 2010)...well worth the wait.

Be patient, read on the different brands, find out if you have options (compatibility and such) and READ THE FORUMS. I have found 90% of the info I needed here, even when I googled general questions about my platform, accesories, technical data, etc. I ended up on ASC.

To add to that:

MP5 is a good starter gun IF you buy it used from a reputable user. I got an ICS MP5 for my friend. He loves it. The gun was in very good condition and some upgrades where present.

If you really want and SD5 (I personally prefer an SD6), the G&G one is quite decent. Your piston head will explose eventually (they di it because the shape that is given to the head to make it "more" efficient also weakens it way too much. The stock guns will chrony at about 330 fps. If you want to up that to 380 right away, you definitely want to change the piston head at the same time.

MP5 mags are long and slim. Not that much longer than an M4 mag. Best thing to do is to find a vest or rig that can accept double M4 mags with a large, adjustable lip over the pouches or one that is specifically made for MP5. You can easilly fit 3 MP5 mags in theses pouches and keep them secure.

MP5 mags are also really cheap... you can get a box of 10x 78rnd for about 100$.

If you are not sure, you should consider an M4 over it. Easier to find parts. More ways to customize it (yet everyone seems to build the same gun...lol). Easier to find mags on the field (in case you run out).

DON'T buy the G&G Blowback M4s. They really suck. Their regular M4s are quite the normal ones, so it is a good buy.

Same thing, you can get 10 mags for about 100$.

For the vest, almost all vests are build for M4/5.56 mags. Avoid the cheap 60-80$ vests. I got one as a one-day backup plan and ended dumping it and borrowing a drop-leg panel to someone.

Again, it is personal taste over reliability over function. Basically, every AEG will work. The difference is how long, and how do you feel when you use it. I personally can't stand AKs. Feels akward.

If you want to try out a few gun, PM me. I am in Longueuil.

G&G Pistons are good, keep it. If you plan on replacing the piston head just besure to file down the key that it has ( locks into the key-way in the piston head) to prevent any rotation between piston and head. A G&G piston head should last a long time at 380 fps as long as you keep the POM cylinder head to keep the shock down. Seeing a you are new to airsoft I'd track down someone with a chrono and test the gun first before doing anything to it. After 1000 rounds your spring should be broken in, if your not shooting consistant 370-380's then your compression is low and replacing the Piston head O-ring and possibly the air nozzle should get you up to spec, I have Worked on many G&G AEG's and the O-rings are really hit and miss BUT a healthy (solid compression) Premium model G&G mp5 will run consistant 370-380's without a spring change.

The clearsoft piston heads of the G&G are not the same as the normal ones... there is 6 holes in it (like normal pistons) but there is also a twisted funnel into the face of the piston. That makes the piston head hit only by center and 6 tiny, 1mm wide "branches". The piston outer ring (ouside the funnels) just explodes and bits are shot everywhere (barrel, mechbox, body via the vent hole). This leads to a sharp, star-shaped piston head. The head o-ring has nothing to hold anymore and is shredded to pieces and shoot out the gun (jamming BBs sometimes). The cylinder head is also shreaded by the sharp edges and rubber fly out again... at that point, your gun shoots under 100 fps and you have to change a bunch of parts (piston head, cylinder head, usually hop-up rubber and if you are not lucky, piston, gears and inner barrel).

Oh, by the way I am reparing the guns at Surplus IG... I think I have a bag full of piston heads like that. It is to the point where the shop decided to replace the piston heads with Modify POM instead because it is cheaper to buy a good head that 3-4 G&G ones...
