Least Smelly Brand of Propane?

I use propane exclusively in my GBB now and I know that propane is scented so you can easily smell a leak but that poses a problem for us airsofters. What brands do you guys find smell the least? I found Coleman propane to be bearable and mild. I just got this new stuff from Superstore (Loblaws for those in the east) called Propane Expert and that stuff is STRONG and tends to linger for quite a while. It smells like rotting eggs and is just generally unpleasant.

Stay away form wallmart ones dam they smell horrible the only propane i have found to smell nice is the colment actauly i can hardly notice te smell anymore, anyways just saty away form anything form wall mart as its hardcore nasty sulfur smell.

FOX_111 July 12th, 2008 23:05

Coleman propane don't smell that much, or is it me getting used to the smell?

Gigaknight July 12th, 2008 23:14

Heh heh, I can just picture the smell giving your position away... or maybe it would deter people from finding you? "Oh man, do smell that? Smells like shit!"

Seriously though, I found that Coleman's seems to do the job.

Crunchmeister July 12th, 2008 23:14

I've tried different propane types, from torch cannisters to camping cannisters, and the least smelly IMO is Coleman. I have to agree that of the ones I've tried, it's easily the most bearable, and the smell dissipates the fastest.

I bought this one cannister at a small mom & pop store downtown a couple of months ago. It stunk like nobody's business. I fired a couple of mags in my basement, and had to stop and open a window. I went out for the afternoon, and on my return, I could still smell it, but everywhere in the house rather than just the basement.

I think I speak for everyone at CAPS this week, the smell of propane = fun.

It covers up "biological weapons" if you get my "drift".

I think it's just us getting used to the smell, I now associate the smell of propane with a GBB and it doesn't smell so bad, on the other hand I have family and a significant other who hate the smell.

Drake July 13th, 2008 00:59

Coleman's isn't that bad, but I notice that unlike whatever used to be in Chinese green gas, the olfactory additive (Ethanethiol -- the smelliest stuff on Earth, according to Guinness World Records) seems to really cling to stuff it came into contact with: my GBBs chambers now have a permanent propane odor to them, as do the insides of my mags and valves.

MadMax should come up with some scented silicone oil (no, not th sexy kind).

And I still have a can of oldschool Green I used for home shooting. My living space is too small to have it stinking of propane.

Drache July 13th, 2008 01:03

just light a match that will get rid of the smell :D

Moderate July 13th, 2008 01:04

At Border War last year, I remember someone from Toronto (US side) mentioning that the smell of propane is better than sex :D

After a while it seemed I was getting used to the smell or it just was never that bad. Then I smelled the propane out of those propane torches and it seemed so much worse. Duno though

Coleman isn't too bad for me

I see what you did there

Coleman still has that terrible sulfur smell. For outdoor use, it's perfectly fine and dissipates fairly quickly, just don't fire your GBB indoors. Coleman is also readily available (and cheap) at Canadian Tire too, thats a plus.

I prefer either propane torch canisters or the portable stove ones as they are slim and would fit much better with your gear (Much slimmer compared to typical tanks).

i guess i can stop smelling my gun for leaks now...

IMO Ozark Trail propane fuel (2 pkg wall mart) has little to no smell
it looks just like a coleman(stink horrible)

Coleman cans

Produce the greatest number of valve issues with the AI adapter though..

There seems to be some issues with their valve that can cause it to stick open. This is an issue with the CAN not the adaptor.

I've never had this issue with other brands though

( we go through a lot of propane at TTAC3... and we have worn out I don't know how many Adaptors ... So may in fact the we are the defacto test site for AI adaptors )

I believe MadMax was offering a tool (Free) to check if the tank's valve would accomadte the adapter properly. I just went to CT and was playing with all of the tanks and all of them were perfectly compatible (Prior to buying).

I've never had my valve stick open.

but then you likely don't go through 100 cans of propane in a year either

Kookamater July 13th, 2008 03:58

I dunno about you, but I love that smell. :D

It's so 'manly', if you will.

Manly's not supposed to smell like rotten eggs.

i can attest to that. in chem this year i got a bunch of that on my hands, god is it difficult to wash, i ended up having to douse my hands in hydrochloric acid 7 times in order to get the smell out (with a rinse repeat in between each to prevent my skin from corroding).

MadMax July 16th, 2008 03:01

To defeat the smelliest stuff on Earth with another smell, I would have to come up with a smellier thing. I don't really want to be embroiled in a stench arms race.

The least stinky propane I've found is RiverTrail branded propane in a can similar to a Coleman can. Try your Home Hardware. I'm not sure if their bottler may have changed their odourant though. Coleman used to be the least odourifous, but that changed a few years ago.

HCl to wash your hands?! The molecule looks like a little doggy. Maybe it can be coaxed away with a piece of liver. Can it be solvated in something less nasty like Varsol or ethanol?

Lakonian July 16th, 2008 10:51

Mastercraft propane is the least ranky. It doesn't linger too long either.

I just bought a 3 pack of coleman, and the smell is pretty narsty.

it was what was on hand. also aslong as it diddent start corroding the skin, it wouldent hurt. so in my mind it worked just fine.
