First pic of my "ghillie" suit

I only managed to get one pic out of these batteries before they died on me (friggin' digital cameras).

It's made out of the nylon/rubber/netting camo nets you can buy at any hunting goods store, with a little bit of marpat and cadpat thrown in for good measure. The 'base' underneath is just the only olive green clothing I own (so far.)

I'll try to grab some 'close up' shots so you can see what I'm talking about.

This isn't really a ghillie suit, it's just some of that netting thrown over my shoulders and looped around my head/arms.

But I'm planning to sew this on to some BDUs at some point, and tie on some burlap and jute scrim as well.

There's your answer. Its not really a ghillie, and it doesn't look like a ghillie.

My question to you is: would you go to 'war' with it?

Jar|-|ead April 27th, 2006 17:53

dude...it looks like CAMO NETTING??...sorrie to kick you in the balls...

Penguin April 27th, 2006 20:22

I have that same net up on my wall, it's plastic and russles like mad when you move it.

most likely not the most wise choice.

JacoNB April 27th, 2006 21:02

Yeah, bad idea. Point taken.

I was hoping to find a better alternative to the jute and burlap that sheds like dead cat. lol.

I wasn't really worried about the rustle; it was getting the stuff snagged on branches and stuff - I think that's really what'd make it unusable.

Oh, well.

Graham April 27th, 2006 21:33

all mockery and criticism aside (though they were all valid points)

it doesn't look THAT bad

Sir Toby April 27th, 2006 23:16

If you call it a ghilliesuit, then its a ghilliesuit.

The first one is allways the hard one, specially if you go puplic with it, like now. I'm looking forward to see you next project :salute: 8)

If it were me, I'd put a garbage bag over my head and cut two little holes out for my eyes. For you sir, you have obviously put time into this and I congratulate on it. Keep up the good work man!

No, what you do is, you soak yourself in glue and roll around in your surrounding area for awhile and wait to dry :D.

FOX_111 April 28th, 2006 00:00

I tried this aproach as a kid. I just hated the smell of that net and dumper the whole thing in a big trash bag. I now use it to cover my shit in milsims.

It's not practical at all when used as a ghillie since it catch on everything, smell like cheap plastic and is really not conceiling yourself verygood.

Good try though.

One guy I know when with this aproach, but in a different way.

Sorry for the large size.
It's kinda effective and look ok.
I like the idea for a quick ghillie.

That might work, why don't you cut out a large strip of grass then strap it to yourself so you don’t make as much of a mess

ps, this is a joke

Your method works best in an outdoor scenario I give you that. Hurrah!
However mine serves best for ALL purposes (indoor/outdoor) wahahaha ...*I'm so lame XD

You might want to look into a "leshij" suit. I looks to be a similar premise to your ... contraption. :)

Yeah, that's exactly the stuff I'm using. There's another kind, too, it's actually the majority of the material, but it's more like nylon than plastic, but it's really dark, and probably wouldn't be very effective without something else to give it some depth.

Anyway, thanks for not laughing at me too much... the hardest part was asking my girlfriend to take the picture. :D

SEALs April 28th, 2006 14:39

Keep it up, doing a real ghillie is hard and long. It took about 40 hours for mine, but when you see the result and the surprise on the face of the guy you just froze at 1.5 feet away from your position, there a satisfaction feeling that cant be describe

JacoNB April 28th, 2006 15:01

That's pretty sharp!

:)

Arch April 30th, 2006 19:41

it's not too bad for a start. but you'll need to add some burlap or jute to get the look of grass or underbrush. a friend of mine made a ghillie simillar to yours and added less than a role of the jute twine to it, and he was near imposible to find in it.

keep at it. looks great so far

youonlywish May 6th, 2006 16:23

Wow... best game ever.
Anyways, yes it could work well.

I own that DVD. It's very good at giving an overview of what exactly a ghillie suit is, what it's trying to accomplish, and a few walkthroughs on how to make an effective ghillie.

I really found it informative and good for the visuals. I research the shit outta things before attempting something, so there's always google and free stuff to learn from. But if you want something that gives you everything you need to know and worry about with ghillies go buy that vid.
