Is this a good starter airsoft gun?

Ok, so recently me and my friends went airsofting for the first time at an airsoft place and we LOVED it! Only problem was we have crappy walmart and canadian tire guns and by the time we were done the guns were in pieces :P
So i went looking for a new gun and i found this
http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/st...008000_425-8-4

Im looking for something relatively cheap but good, since i really dont have the money to go for the 400 dollar guns, i found out everything is metal except for the body and butt of the gun so thats obviously good and it will cost me 159.99..So im wonder if it will be a good buy, also the place i go is mainly CQB stuff..

M.Garcia July 2nd, 2010 23:08

Well firstly you can't order guns from the states or anywhere else in the world because they will get seized at customs. You have to buy within Canada.

Secondly, before we can help you regarding buying guns, you need to be age-verified.

Also remember. You buy cheap, you get cheap.

DropTheBomb July 2nd, 2010 23:09

Well i found it in a shop in calgary so im fine with that, also where can i get age verified?

M.Garcia July 2nd, 2010 23:11

Well first you should update your profile with your location. Secondly, look for Age Verifiers. They have a tag saying so under their name. They need to be around your location so that you can meet face to face and have your ID checked to make sure your atleast 18 years old.

FOXhunter July 2nd, 2010 23:12

Best bet friend is to contact a verifier in your area (if your 18+) and hold out for all the fun stuff that age verification has to offer you. Also you might want to think about saving some $ airsoft isn't a cheap sport, getting a good can be pricey.

DropTheBomb July 2nd, 2010 23:14

Ok well thanks for the help, and ill hopeful will get age verified soon...But im still wondering if this would be a decent gun to buy?

To play at games with. No. Just simple, not even a $300 gun is very good. $400 is basic for a decent starter gun.

Styrak July 2nd, 2010 23:17

No, not really. That's not a full size AEG, it's an AEP with a tiny mechbox and proprietary parts.

Short Round July 2nd, 2010 23:19

We need to put a link/banner to the FAQ's on the sites main page. I facepalm myself everytime I see these

M.Garcia July 2nd, 2010 23:22

Ye dude read the FAQ's in the forums, they'll explain the answers to a lot of questions.

DropTheBomb July 2nd, 2010 23:23

Hmmm so would it be better just to get a CO2 pistol like this one?

M.Garcia July 2nd, 2010 23:24

Well what are your intended uses for it?

CQB mostly, thats why i kinda liked that mp7

M.Garcia July 2nd, 2010 23:28

If your seriously considering getting into the sport, that is a waste of money. I won't be getting a pistol until I've got my whole loadout. AEG, Vest, Camo, Mags, Scope, etc.

Let go of your pre-conceived ideas and listen to the members on these forums and see what others are doing. That is honestly a waste if you don't have an AEG. Save up your money, and when you can afford a decent starter AEG then get it. Don't spend recklessly cause you can't afford something right this moment.

Short Round July 2nd, 2010 23:35

If you intend on buying a cheap gun and wearing civis or cheap multicam then I suggest not even getting into the sport. Your min budget for getting into airsofting should be atleast $500-$700 ($300+ for the gun, bdu and vest $200+, mags, charger, loaders, sights, etc. $200+) you may get lucky with what you find on here but still it will be pricey none the less.

That mp7 from bass pro shop I was looking at because I want a mp7 BUT I am still getting a $400 P90 as my main gun. My mp7 I'd just use to shoot around in my basement (I own a real metal firing target for real guns)

You may not even find your gun right away. I got into the sport a year ago, and just attended my first game a couple weeks ago.

I'll be honest with you, its not the worst but the money definitely could be better spent on something else. Dont get me wrong, that little MP7 will serve its purpose but as already stated its an AEP not an AEG. The fact that it uses a AEP make box makes sourcing replacement internals a little more difficult. Given that it also is not the most fantastic item on the ladder of quality it will eventually break down somewhere along the line and the cost of repair may out weigh the cost of the MP7 itself.

Dont forget to factor in budgeting for additional magazines and batteries as well. That little MP7 can suck back some serious juice and a spare battery or two will definitely be a necessity along with additional magazines. If you enjoy CQB style play that the MP7 is fair choice because it is small and compact. I have owned both that brand as well as a TokyoMarui made MP7 and the TM last quite a bit longer. The first thing to break on the cheaper MP7 was the magazine release and that became rather annoying very quickly.

In conclusion an airsoft gun is only part of the equation that makes up a good player. However the caveat to that statement is that there is a line of a minimum quality that must exist and be achieved as well. That MP7 achieves that line but just barely.

cjboi July 3rd, 2010 03:16

no its GARBAGE... dont waste your money on this gun. I mean even on a TM mp7, the only good thing about the TM mp7 was the external, not the internals. And this gun? complete no! externals and internals are complete fail. Save your money and listen to other people. Get age verified and maybe you'll find a better gun here and save its not a cheap hobby

I'll say this much, there is a reliable retailer in Canada selling good quality guns at a very low price. Shop around, compare the price vs. quality for guns on the market today. Just whatever you do, do NOT shop at buyairsoft.ca.

The "is this a good starter gun?" question comes up so often that I am have actually been thinking about this.

Here is the result: As stated by others, make sure you have $300+ to spend. That minimum line is really about there. I think the best starter gun is a new or unupgraded TM AEG. Yes, you must get an aeg first. Unless you like tinkering with small parts that need to be painstakingly put together or want to pay a local gun doctor 10-20% of the value of the gun every season or 2, you will want a stock TM. They usually last up to 100,000 cycles. You will hear many testimonials about cheap chinese TM clones lasting just as long, but it's a crap shoot. TM guns will last 5 years without opening them up if you practise proper usage (proper usage is a different post, learn it!). When it comes time to upgrade, you still have a great platform and it may cost you $25 more to put metal bushing and spring guide in, but you still have TM quality and fit and finish.

TM AEG's are the ultimate "starter gun".

Talk to Ken from 007, he's an Age Verifier as well as a retailer so two birds with one stone.

Second, I hope you're not planning on just playing at Laser Trek, supposedly it isn't that great of a place (not the worst place, at least it's a place to play but at the same time you can't really just exclusively play CQB airsoft without wanting more, it's like rock climbing and bouldering sure it's fun but sometimes you then want to switch it up a bit and do the other activity) and the outdoor games are a lot better.
