It is a very common problem and it has nothing to do with the assembly, the cheap bbs were preventing the gears from turning at a normal rate causing stress on the battery and gearbox. Goldenball proslick seamless bbs will prevent this from reoccurring

I'll actually be helpful here. He may be young, but he just doesn't understand what he's doing guys.
Maybe make more effort to help him comprehend his situation instead of just flaming off the handle.
The BB's cannot impede the function of the gearbox, they simply get popped into place in the hop chamber, then a burst of air from the mechbox shoots them out.
Where the .12s become a problem is they get jammed down the barrel, slowing down the forward movement of the piston. But that will not slow down the gears.
At worst, the gears will engage the piston too early and strip teeth off.
Furthermore, if a gear was in fact "misaligned" most likely the shaft on it is broken. If the mechbox is metal, it's not physically possible for a gear to simply pop out of place, it would have had to move sideways over 3mm in order to come out of the bushing.
